Expecting a baby? Are you in the least bit curious about if you will have a girl or a boy? There are several myths floating around that suggest you can actually determine the sex of your unborn child by weight gain, shape of belly, heartburn, etc.
Physicians and scientists have put these myths to the test, and it turns out that these methods are all pretty much…false:
Weight Gain and Shape of the Belly In a study of 104 pregnant women who didn't know the sex of their baby before giving birth, the shape of their belly during pregnancy wasn't an accurate predictor of the baby's sex. In a different study of five hundred births, neither the mother's weight nor her weight gain during pregnancy helped determine the baby's sex. Heartburn Heartburn is terrible but is it a way to predict the sex of your baby? In a study that measured how much heartburn sixty-four pregnant women experienced during pregnancy, the severity of the heartburn symptoms had nothing to do with whether the baby was a boy or a girl. There is one interesting finding: the more severe a woman's heartburn, the fuller the head of hair on the new baby. Mother's Intuition In a study of 212 pregnant women, 110 patients had a strong feeling about what sex the baby was going to be, but maternal intuition was no better than random guessing for predicting the baby's sex. In another study of 104 women, 55 percent of the women correctly guessed the sex of the baby, this was again not any better than they would have done with random guessing. Mothers did not do any better whether they made the prediction early, late, or in the middle of the pregnancy. Baby's Heart Rate Some people claim that if the fetal heart rate is 140 beats per minute or faster, the baby is a girl. If the fetal heart rate is 139 beats per minute or lower, then it's a boy. Scientific data suggests that there is no significant difference in the fetal heart rates of a male and female fetus at any recorded gestational age. Drano? What does Drano have to do with determining the sex of a baby? Some people claim that if you mix a pregnant woman's urine with Drano and it turns green, this means that she is having a boy – and if it turns brown, that she's having a girl. This is interesting but, other people seem to think that brown predicts a boy and green predicts a girl. This myth is all confused and does not work regardless. So don't even bother. Morning Sickness Morning sickness refers to the nauseous stomach of a pregnant woman. Some people tend to believe that if you get morning sickness really bad then the baby will most likely turn out to be a girl. Several studies support this finding. However, the difference isn't huge, so don't be surprised if your morning sickness is awful and you end up having a boy.
