Insomnia

Most of us have had a night or two of sleeplessness but when that night turns into a frequent occurrence, it may be time to consult a doctor. The term insomnia refers to the inability to fall asleep, maintain sleep or maintain restorative sleep on a frequent basis.

According to the Mayo Clinic, one in 10 Americans suffers from insomnia. Additionally, one in four people have issues sleeping on occasion. Insomnia can become a serious condition when it occurs on a regular basis. The prescription medication Ambien is a popular treatment for insomnia. Your physician can prescribe Ambien. Additionally the Mayo Clinic recommends several at-home treatments to help alleviate your insomnia:

  • Avoid lying in bed trying to sleep
  • Exercise regularly
  • Avoid caffeine, nicotine and alcohol
  • Check your medications for side effects that may lead to insomnia
  • Hide the clocks in your bedroom
  • Avoid trying to sleep, instead relax until becoming drowsy
  • Establish a bedtime and wakeup time and stick to it
  • Try a pain reliever to control your pain while sleeping
  • Avoid napping
  • Cut down on sleep interruptions

If you find these home remedies do not help with your insomnia, contact your doctor to discuss the many medication and techniques utilized to cut down on or prevent insomnia.
