Pink Eye
Conjunctivitis (pink eye) is a common ailment of the eye in which it becomes infected or inflamed for a variety of reasons. Most individuals who suffer from pink eye experience redness, itchiness, a gritty sensation, discharge and tearing in one or both eyes (see pictures of pink eye).
Pink eye is caused by one of the following: bacteria, viruses, allergies, a foreign object in the eye, or a chemical splash. Each type of cause requires a specific treatment as designated by your physician. Pink Eye Treatments
Bacterial – If your pink eye is a result of a bacterial infection, your physician may prescribe an antibiotic in the form of eye drops to treat the infection. There may also be the option of antibiotic eye ointment, depending on your condition. In general, patients notice improvement in their condition within one to two days of starting antibiotic therapy. Viral – Unfortunately, conjunctivitis caused by a virus cannot be treated with an antibiotic. In this case, the patient can treat the symptoms of the pink eye. For example, there are several over-the-counter medications to help relieve redness and itching in the eye. Be sure to contact your doctor before starting a treatment plan. Allergic – Last but not least, pink eye can be caused by allergies. Your physician may be able to prescribe you an antihistamine, anti-inflammatory drops, steroids or a decongestant to help ward off allergy-induced conjunctivitis.
