Scabies
Scabies is a skin condition caused by the Sarcoptes scabiei mite. This eight-legged mite burrows under the skin causing an itchy rash that can spread quickly and is highly contagious. People who suffer from scabies, according to the Mayo Clinic, often experience severe itching that gets worse at night. The rash caused by scabies is made up of tiny blisters and bumps on the skin (see pictures of scabies rash). Scabies is typically found between the fingers, in the armpits, around the midsection of the body, in the fold of the elbow, on the knees, shoulder blades and buttocks, and around the breasts and genital area. It is also not uncommon for children to have scabies infestations on the face, scalp, neck, hands and feet. Thankfully, there is a scabies cure that entails ridding the body of the infestation with a medication prescribed by your physician. Scabies cures include Elimite, Acticin, and Eurax. While medication can kill the mite in a fast manner, the scabies skin rash may take more time to heal. Because scabies is highly contagious and can spread quickly, your physician may recommend treating the entire household for scabies even if they do not show any symptoms of the condition. If not treated properly, it is possible for scabies to spark a secondary bacterial infection that may require antibiotic treatment.
