Skin Rashes

rashesSkin rashes can occur on various places of the body for a wide variety of reasons. Depending on the rash, the effected area may be large or small, itchy, red, or inflamed. If you are experiencing a skin rash, we suggest you contact a physician to learn more about your specific condition.

The following is a brief overview of a few of the many common skin rashes.

Atopic dermatitis – Also known as eczema, atopic dermatitis is a chronic condition associated with inflamed and itchy skin. This particular skin rash can be found in the folds of the backs of the knees, neck, or elbows.

Christmas tree rash – This scaly rash can range in color from tan to pink. It typically begins in one spot on the back and spreads outward like a tree.

Contact dermatitis – When skin comes into contact with an allergen or irritant, it can cause dry, red patches to appear on the skin. Contact dermatitis is most commonly found on the fingers, face and hands. Other symptoms include bumps and blisters.

Drug rash – When an individual reacts to a prescribed or over-the-counter medication it can induce what is known as a drug rash. Drug rashes are most often associated with the use of diuretics, anti-seizure medications and antibiotics. The rash appears over most of the body in the form of red spots. A drug rash may also indicate a serious or life-threatening allergic reaction therefore it is highly recommended individuals who suffer from a rash of this magnitude contact their doctor.

Miliaria – Also known as heat rash, miliaria can appear in two forms – miliaria rubra and miliaria cyrstallina. Both rashes appear as blistery bumps caused by active sweat glands.
